What could be worse than buying a new or old car and not being able to register it because the insurance agent's office closed an hour earlier, OR its Sunday and most offices in Winnipeg or Manitoba for that matter rolled up the carpet at 6pm!

Well this is where the "7 day transfer" loop hole comes into play. It's a legitimate process provided by MPI to allow people to take insurance from an already insured car and use it for a car that you just purchased; you can read about how it works herehere!

You can transfer the plates from your currently registered vehicle to your newly purchased vehicle when:

  • Both vehicles are in the same registration class
  • You have sold, traded or scrapped the registered vehicle

You have 7 days from the day you disposed of your old vehicle to register the replacement vehicle with Manitoba Public Insurance. But remember, the coverage on your new vehicle is limited to what you carried on your old vehicle. Always check to make sure the maximum insured value (and declared value if applicable) from your old vehicle are sufficient for your new one.

What you will need:

  1. A parent, relative or lifelong friend (someone you REALLY trust).
  2. A buddy with a car or another car you can drive.
  3. Registration papers from your old car.
  4. 2 blank bills of sale.
  5. A pen.

This is how it works:

  1. On paper write a bill of sale to your friend except you are going to gift it (no money is exchanged); you can use the example below for your bill of sale.
  2. Take the current registration for your old car and rip off the TOD and give it to your friend
    • Technically you just have to rip off the TOD from your current registration and leave it in a safe place
  3. Park your old car which you have now technically "disposed of" because you sold it to your friend and remove the license plates.
    • Make sure its not on a road as cars with no plates will get towed :)

Thats it your done!

When you go-to purchase your new car all you have to-do is put your old plates on the new car and leave the registration (for the old car) without the TOD attached and a copy of your bill of sale that you and your friend signed inside the car. You now have 7 days of free-ish insurance and your coverage has now been legally transferred to your new car.

Some thing to remember:

  1. You have 7 days as of the date on the bill of sale of your old car.
  2. Technically your friend owns your car as long as a bill of sale exists.
  3. Destroy the bills of sale for your old car as soon as possible.
  4. You could repeat this process every 7 days if you destroyed the old bill of sale, then created, signed and dated the new bill of sale
    •  I would consider this abuse though and if you did it repeatedly it would be fraud.
  5. You can only transfer your coverage from :
    • car to car
    • truck to truck
